5. Cancer
There are some studies that have shown that folic acid actually prevents certain types of cancer cells from multiplying. In fact, consuming folic acid supplements can help protect women from developing colon cancer, cervical cancer, and pancreatic cancer. In addition, insufficient amounts of folic acid are linked to breast cancer. Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol is linked to creating a higher risk of developing breast cancer in women.
When a woman drinks alcohol and also has a low folate level, the risk for breast cancer is even higher. Supplementing folic acid can help to reduce the risk of developing not only breast cancer, but other types of cancers as mentioned. Eating a healthy diet that includes foods that are rich in folate can help decrease the risk of developing cancers. Folic acid supplements are available as well and these can also help to prevent certain types of cancer from developing or multiplying.
