You may have heard that observing a sleeping infant is a highly effective method for relieving tension. There is something incredibly calming about being in the presence of someone who is entirely innocent, at peace, and content to sleep for the majority of the time (a crying infant is much less relaxing).
However, this is even more effective for mothers. You will generate large quantities of oxytocin (the love hormone) and many other endorphins, such as serotonin (the feel-good hormone), when you breastfeed. These also convert into the sleep hormone melatonin, making it easier to fade off to sleep.
Due to these factors, many women will experience a ‘high’ during and after lactation. This could aid in the fight against postpartum depression.
