As previously stated, there are likely numerous breastfeeding benefits that we simply do not know about yet. In addition, there are many things we are aware of but do not yet fully comprehend!
Did you know, for instance, that breastfeeding statistically reduces the risk of ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer? This is a finding from multiple investigations. According to one study, breastfeeding for the first two years may reduce the risk of breast cancer by 11–25%!
Our current best explanation is that the repeated ovulatory cycles and exposure to elevated levels of estrogen experienced by women who do not breastfeed increase their risk of developing problems.
There are however additional possible explanations. For instance, it could be due to the stress-relieving properties of lactation. Similarly, it may have something to do with autophagy – the body’s tendency to break down its own ‘waste’ cells when it has no other fuel source.
