2. Coffee
Coffee is another food to avoid on a diet for gastritis. Coffee is acidic and contains caffeine. It can increase acid secretion, which may be the cause of stomach irritation.
Coffee can make gastritis worse. When acid and caffeine are in contact with the mucosa (lining of the stomach), they can cause discomfort and inflammation in the abdomen. This can result in bloating. If you have been diagnosed with gastritis, it is best to avoid coffee consumption.
It may seem that decaffeinated tea or coffee is safe to drink, but the acidity can cause inflammation and pain. According to Center of Science in Public Interest, decaffeinated caffeine contains the same amount of acid and caffeine as regular coffee. Three to eleven grams of caffeine are found in a cup of decaffeinated espresso. In this case, it is best to avoid coffee, whether caffeinated.
