Breathing problems
The spinal muscular atrophy is a serious health hazard for humans as it causes a weakening of the muscles involved in breathing. SMA patients can develop severe respiratory problems due to the compression of the lungs in the chest cavity caused by the spine curvature. In infants with SMA, the lungs are not properly developed, making them more susceptible to respiratory infections. SMA patients have a weak cough, hypoventilation and sleep problems.
