7. Why does maple syrup appear in the Master Cleanse?
The Master Cleanse, designed by Stanley Burroughs back in the 1950s is the most popular detox program on the planet. The Master Cleanse is used to improve digestion and clear the GI system. The cleanse requires abstinence from food for up 10 days. During this time, the only thing that practitioners can drink is a homemade lemonade made from clean water, cayenne, maple syrup, and lemon juice.
Maple syrup is added to the lemonade recipe for extra energy. Maple syrup contains natural sugars that have a lower glycemic indices, which means they do not cause insulin to spike as much as sugar or syrups based on sugar. Manganese is also found in maple syrup at 22 percent of the daily recommended amount. This mineral is essential for the efficient production of enzymes in the body. Zinc is also found in maple syrup, which is essential for the maintenance of endothelium (blood plasma) cells.
Consult your doctor before you buy maple syrup or embark on a Master cleanse. It may not be the right detox strategy for all.
