5. Why is the tiny handle on the bottle so small?
You’ve probably noticed that every maple syrup bottle has a small handle. All manufacturers use the same design. The handle is too small to be of any use. This feature may seem like a Canadian quirk but it has a purpose that may be interesting.
Maple syrup was traditionally sold in 5-pound containers that had a handle at the side for easy loading and unloading. As the maple syrup industry grew, 5-pound bottles became less necessary. The consumers prefer to buy smaller quantities of syrup. The packaging was changed to suit the demand of the market.
Bottlers kept the handles as a way to establish brand identity even though they served no functional purpose. This design is unique to maple syrup. It’s synonymous with the product. There are no handles on the bottles of syrup sugar.
