Croup: 14 signs and symptoms
4. The croup is a spasmodic condition
The spasmodic form of croup differs slightly from coup cough. This type of croup is different because it does not have the usual symptoms associated with croup. The onset of a cough is not preceded by any symptoms such as a runny nose, headaches, fevers, etc.
Parents will often put their baby to sleep without realizing it. The child will be found to have croup symptoms in the middle of the night: a pitched cough and a barking sound. The child returns to normal by midday and then again in the night.
The child may not recover until several days have passed. The name spasmodic does not refer to spasms but rather the spasming symptoms.
