2. Bruising
A rib is usually fractured or broken by an impact. The impact may be enough to rupture the blood vessels in the affected area. You will see a bruise where the injury occurred due to the blood vessels burst. Bruising is often tender and will spread. The bruising associated with a fractured rib can be darker than the normal bruises you might get from bumps or scrapes.
Even if you initially did not feel any pain or swelling in your rib area, you should still go to the doctors as soon as possible if you notice these symptoms. The x-ray can help you determine the severity of your injury and what treatment is needed to prevent further damage.
