Broken Ribs: Symptoms and Treatment

11. Impaired Movement

You will probably notice that if you have broken or fractured one of your ribs you do not want to move that area at all. Moving the affected area can be extremely painful.

Even simple movements, such as moving in your sleep, can increase the risk of further damaging a fractured or broken bone. A rib can’t be splinted the same as a break or fracture in another bone.

It can be difficult to hold the ribs while they heal. It can take anywhere between six and eight weeks for a fractured or broken rib to heal. You will be unable to move freely during this period and should limit your daily activities to allow yourself to heal.
