Lucy was frightened by a loud bang coming from a car that had backfired. This caused Lucy to pull so hard on the leash that Tom’s mom could no longer hold it.
Lucy was gone before they even knew it. She had vanished into the dense forest. Tom’s mother said that it was “heartbreaking” to see his reaction.
