4. DHEA Increased
DHEA, a substance produced by the brain, helps us thrive even when we are under stress. This is a little different from anti-cortisol, which simply buffers the effects of cortisol.
One study found that top athletes and special forces personnel produced more DHEA and Neuropeptide Y than the average. They were able to be highly excited and aroused during stressful situations, resulting in an increase of sympathetic response. This leads to improved reflexes and performance.
The DHEA increase ensured they could still access higher-order brain functions, such as those in the hippocampus. They could be highly focused, aroused and excited without being confused or forgetful.
