Trans fats are among the worst fats to consume, according to any doctor or dietician. These artificial fats can be made by adding hydrogen into an unsaturated oil. Hydrogen makes liquid fats more stable. On food labels, trans fats are usually listed as partially hydrogenated oil.
Trans fats are found in most types of butter and are added to foods to extend their shelf life. Trans fats are one of the leading causes of inflammation. They reduce the “good” HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol in the body. Trans fats can also affect the endothelial cell function, which lines the arteries. Trans fats can cause inflammation and increase the risk for several diseases including heart disease. They should therefore be avoided.
