5. The body usually recovers miraculously
Guillain Barre Syndrome can cause paralysis that is so severe, it seems like the person will never recover. This is a very frightening situation.
Experience for the person and their family.
The good news is, the body usually recovers. The body will usually recover thanks to a phenomenon called neuroplasticity. This describes the nervous system as an organ that is constantly changing and growing, much like a muscular tissue.
This is because when you connect two nerves together, the connection strengthens. The dendrites (tendrils) of the nerves will reach closer to input neurons’ axons. During this time, myelination occurs, which increases the speed of transmissions. It is through this process that we develop motor skills and techniques, whether it be the perfect golf swing, or playing a piano concerto. This is also how the body can fully recover from Guillain-Barre Syndrome after the illness has been defeated.
