4. Innocent Bystander Theory/Molecular Mimicry
Guillain-Barre Syndrome’s exact mechanism of action is still not completely understood. We do, however, have several theories and possible explanations.
The most common one is that the molecules of some nerves are very similar to those found in harmful microorganisms. The body is tricked into thinking that these microorganisms are the same as the harmful invaders by the body. They then attack the myelin.
This is because Guillain Barre syndrome can be preceded by viral or bacterial infections. It is also possible that antibodies are created to combat something called campylobacter Jejuni, a bacterial disease that attacks axons.
