Guillain Barre Syndrome can be life-threatening, so patients will need to be hospitalized. There, they can be closely monitored for signs of respiratory problems, heart problems or other serious complications. They will often need to be put on a ventilator and should remain there until all symptoms are gone. Patients who have difficulty eating or swallowing may need intravenous nutrition, or assistance to eat.
