14. Treatment
Immunotherapy is often the primary treatment for autoimmune diseases, which are caused by the immunity system. Plasma exchanges are used to remove antibodies. Intravenous immuneglobulin is also useful. It is best to start this treatment 7-14 days after the first symptoms appear. This is another reason why it’s important to act fast when you see them.
Guillain Barre syndrome patients will often also need muscular rehabilitation in order to regain normal movement and senses. It can help to regenerate lost connections between their central nervous system and peripheral nerve system in order to restore strength.
The condition will eventually “cure” by itself. There is no “cure”, so all the attention will be focused on the patient and their care.
