11. Embodied Cognition
Embodied cognition describes the close connection between the mind and the body, and how it could result in a loss of mental ability.
This term is used to describe the way we seem to think using our bodies. Psychologists once thought there was a “mentalese”, a base code for the brain into which all languagesand symbols had to be translated. Now, it’s believed that our bodies and proprioception is what we use to understand and relate to concepts.
You can understand what someone says by picturing yourself experiencing the same thing and remembering it. It happens because the senses and words are closely linked. You can almost feel the vibration of the door as you hear someone talk about turning the key.
You lose an important tool for fully understanding the world when you stop being aware of your body.
