Stenotic tenosynovitis and stenosing tenovaginitis are alternative names for trigger finger. It is a condition that affects the fingers and can cause difficulty in movement and the intermittent freezing of a finger in a position, known as “catching.” It most commonly affects the ring finger or the thumb, but it can occur in any digit and in more than one at a time.
Occasionally, it may appear in both palms. The primary cause of this condition is the tendon outgrowing the tendon sheath it passes through. This prevents the finger from moving properly and produces a clicking sensation. The condition is named after its most prominent symptom, which is the tendency for the finger to become bent and trapped. Additionally, trigger finger causes discomfort and rigidity at the base of the thumb and finger. Here are fourteen potential trigger finger causes.
