- Neuropathy Idiopathic
Neuropathy is diagnosed in a patient when nerve injury interferes with the normal functioning of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Researchers have identified a number of causes for this condition, but sadly not all. When the etiology of peripheral neuropathy cannot be determined, specialists refer to this extremely rare condition as idiopathic neuropathy. The only way to treat peripheral neuropathy is to treat the underlying condition.
In cases where alcoholism causes alcoholic neuropathy or when cancer treatment causes peripheral neuropathy, quitting alcohol and discontinuing chemotherapy or rather discontinuing the use of certain drugs during chemo can reduce the symptoms of neuropathy caused by the aforementioned activities. This type of neuropathy is known as idiopathic neuropathy when doctors are unable to identify the underlying cause of the condition and are left with limited treatment options. Idiopathic neuropathy is prevalent among individuals aged 60 and older.
