11. Twelve. Anemia
Anemia is a condition of the red blood cells that prevents the proper circulation of oxygen throughout the body. Many individuals with parvovirus may also develop anemia, or those with anemia may be more susceptible to contracting parvovirus.
Due to limited hemoglobin, the red blood cells of an anemic individual absorb less oxygen. People with parvovirus who are anemic or who have become anemic will fatigue faster than those without the virus. Some individuals may have a mild iron deficiency that is exacerbated by parvovirus, which causes full-blown anemia. If pregnant women who are already anemic contract parvovirus, their risk of miscarriage increases.
In some instances, parvovirus can be fatal or cause congenital birth defects in pregnant women with anemia. If no other symptoms are present, parvovirus is more difficult to diagnose due to the wide variety of anemia’s causes.
