Antibody treatments are a type of therapy that employs antibodies to assist the body in combating cancer, infection, nerve pain, and other maladies. Antibodies are immune system-produced proteins that adhere to specific markers on cells and tissues.
Antibody treatments are used to treat autoimmune and inflammatory conditions associated with neuropathy. Antibodies are designed to fend off infections, but some individuals with neuropathy require assistance achieving the proper balance.
Intravenous immunoglobulin, or IVIg, is administered via injections of concentrated antibodies derived from the blood of healthy donors. Before injection, the antibodies are deposited in a sterile solution. On average, injections are administered once per month.
Plasmapheresis, also known as plasma exchange, removes antibodies from a person’s blood before returning it to the body. A person may require multiple treatments per week.
