14 Causes of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
4. Allergies
Allergies are one of the most common causes of eustachian tube dysfunction. There are many different types of allergies and they affect everyone differently. Some people suffer from seasonal allergies and others have allergies that affect them all year long. When allergens enter the body, the immune system works to fight them off.
This can lead to inflammation in the ear canal and in the eustachian tubes. This can be painful and also prevent the eustachian tubes from functioning properly. The tubes can become so inflamed that they fail to allow fluid to drain properly. It can build up and put pressure on the ear canal, causing pain. Allergies can be treated with medication and once they are under control the body’s immune system can slow down and inflammation typically goes away. Many people experience painful and itchy ears with not drainage while suffering from allergies. Antihistamines are one of the most common treatments.
