14 Causes of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
13. Ruptured Eardrums
It can be painful to have a ruptured eardrum. Many people don’t realize how common they are. Many things can cause an eardrum to rupture, including pushing foreign objects in the ears, blows to the head or the ear, and pressure buildup behind the eardrum.
A ruptured eardrum, which occurs when the eardrum is down, can cause pain, nausea and ringing. The eustachian tube can become dysfunctional. In most cases, the eardrum will heal by itself. However, the eustachian tubes may not function properly until the eardrum is healed. Surgery may be required to close the ruptured part of the eardrum and ensure that it heals fully. It can lead to more swelling and inflammation, which may slow down the opening of the eustachian tube.
