- Extraneous objects obstructing the airways
Foreign bodies in the airway comprise a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment. When a foreign object is inserted into the trachea through the nostrils or mouth, it can cause a person to cough up blood by bruising the airway’s delicate walls. If a foreign object becomes lodged in the airway, it can cause respiratory difficulties or even choking. The vicinity of the object is likely to become inflamed or infected.
The respiratory system consists of sensitive organs, tissues, and neurons. They are readily captured following a bleed-inducing injury. The system is designed to expel any foreign matter from the airway, and sneezing and coughing are part of the mechanism for cleansing the airway. This explains why a person with a foreign object in the airway coughs up particles and sometimes blood that are attempting to enter the system.
