9.Grain-Based Foods
Starchy foods are foods, such as potatoes, that are rich in… well, starch. If you have ever consumed a large amount of carbohydrate food in a short period of time, you are well aware of how difficult it can be to digest. Perhaps you have felt the unpleasant sensation of a large volume of dry potato slowly sliding down your esophagus!
Not only is starch difficult to metabolize, but it can also be highly absorbent, meaning it can remove moisture from the digestive tract as it passes through. Without this moisture, the lubrication that should enable food to pass through the body more easily is lost, and you become bloated and in pain.
Other carbohydrates consist of pasta, bread, and snacks. Although these may be acceptable in small quantities, it is essential not to consume them too quickly or in excessive quantities.
As with anything, observe your own body. Keep track of what you consume and how it makes you feel, and you will be able to avoid foods that cause flare-ups of your UC.
