Caffeine is a poor choice for those with ulcerative colitis for a variety of reasons.
To begin, caffeine is a diuretic. This means that it encourages us to urinate and evacuate our intestines, which is not ideal if you already have a condition that forces you to frequently visit the restroom. This is a significant issue given that you are likely to be dehydrated if you are experiencing a severe episode.
In addition, caffeine stimulates the fight-or-flight response, which further promotes bowel movements, and vasoconstriction can impede blood flow and may even increase contractions around the colon. Small quantities of caffeine are unlikely to cause problems, but consuming that third cappuccino from Starbucks is probably a poor decision.
